Bhutan
The Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan is slowly emerging after centuries of isolation. It first opened to tourists in 1974 in much regulated manner upon the coronation of the previous monarch Jigme Singe Wangchuk. This mountain kingdom is perhaps the world's most exclusive destination. Because of the government's policy to preserve the country's pristine environment and its culture, the negative impacts of modernization and mass tourism on the environment and traditional lifestyle have been carefully avoided. This together with majestic mountains and a unique cultural heritage preserved for many centuries make Bhutan a truly unique destination.
