| Introduction: |
This is one of the world's classic treks which offer the best opportunity to appreciate the incredible geographic and cultural diversity of the country. The trail had been an important trade route between Nepal and Tibet in the past. Starting from Besisahar, the route follows the Marsyangdi River giving great views of Manaslu and Himal chuli in the east. At the head of the valley is the Thorung La (5416m.), which is the high point of the trek. On the other side of the pass lies the barren Tibetan- like valley of the Kali Gandaki, which is the world's deepest gorge and passes between the giants of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. |

| Itinerary: |
Day 1 :
After landing at the airport in Kathmandu, you will be recieved by a representative from Alps in Nepal and be transferred to the Hotel. Our staff will collect your passport and international air ticket for reconfirming your onward travel. In the evening you will meet the other group members for the trek briefing by your trekking group leader who will also hand over the trek pack and take you to one of the traditional Nepali restaurants for dinner.
Day 2 :
After having breakfast at the hotel, you will be guided for half a day sightseeing tour by an English-speaking guide. The afternoon is at leisure.
Day 3 :
We take a bus to Besi Sahar, which is 170 km from Kathmandu. It is worth having your camera handy, as the bus ride is quite scenic. The seven hours drive takes you to the starting point of our trek, which is a large village, and the administrative centre of the Lamjung District.
Day 4 :
As we leave Besisahar and head towards north, the trail follows picturesque paddy fields. After crossing few rivers on suspension bridges, we reach Nagdi, a small settlement, where we stay overnight.
Day 5 :
We cross the Nagdi River on a suspension bridge and follow the path heading up the left- hand valley of Marsyangdi. After a long climb, we reach the village of Bahun Danda, a large Brahmin settlement perched on top of the hill. The trail descends steeply through the rice and millet terraces, which look like a natural amphitheatre. We keep following the east flank of the Marsyangdi crossing few shops, teahouses and several side streams. After few hours, the path edges a large flat shelf of hillside, where lies the village of Syange which offers a magnificent view of the waterfall on the other side of the valley.
Day 6 :
We get to the east bank of the Marsyangdi River crossing it over the suspension bridge. The valley narrows to a gorge as the walk progresses. A few hours of climb takes us to the village of Jagat, which used to be a customs post during the time of salt trade between Nepal and Tibet. The next village we meet is Chamje from where we descend to cross the river and begin a long steep climb till we get to a wide valley where the village, Tal lies.
Day 7 :
From Tal, we start seeing the Buddhist culture. Leaving the village; we follow Mani walls, which are prayer stones. We reach the village of Dharapani, which lies near the confluence of the Marshyangdi and Dudh khola. Climbing through the alpine forest we reach Bagarchap, which has several teahouses and offers a partial view of Lamjung and Annapurna 2. Another hour later we reach Danaque with breathtaking view of the mountains.
Day 8 :
The trail continues through the forests of pine, rhododendron, oak and maple. While we are following the left bank of Marsyangdi, we go past few land slip areas. After walking through the forest for few hours we enter the village of Koto. The final half - hour walk is mostly along a broad and easy trail led by dry stonewalls, at the end of which lies Chame, the administrative centre of Manang district.
Day 9 :
After crossing the Marsyangdi River on a suspension bridge, the trail head along the river through Keleku to Bhratang, which is a small village, surrounded by apple orchards and has few lodges. We cross the river again and start climbing uphill following the thick vegetation of pine trees. Soon the dun-coloured houses of Upper Pisang can be seen on the hillside ahead. Keeping o the left bank of the river we come to Pisang which is a mall village set in a barren land and has a string of lodges along the trail.
Day 10 :
We climb gently through the pleasant forest of pine with one steep section before reaching the viewpoint on top of the spur. We descend into the flat bed of the valley and reach Humde, which has an airstrip and few teahouses. Along the trail, we have stunning views of Annapurna 3 and 4. We go past Mungji and Braga before we get to Manang, which is a large village with several lodges and is often busy with tourists as most of the people spend two nights here to get acclimatised.
Day 11 :
Today is our rest day but it is advisable to go for a side walk to one of the nearby hills for acclimatisation since Manang is at 3500m, where people can be affected from altitude sickness.
Day 12 :
As we start heading higher, the terrain becomes more arid but the view behind remains mesmerising. The walk is not challenging but there are few steep ascents to contend with. We spend a night at Yak Kharka, which has few lodges and campsites.
Day 13 :
We reach Letdar in little over an hour. The trail climbs gently from there, which later on becomes steep for a short way. After this we start traversing down to the bottom to cross the river on a makeshift bridge. The continuing trail skirts the left- hand side of the meadow, zigzags up the hillside and about 15 minutes later comes to the lodges of Thorong Phedi.
Day 14 :
In order to avoid the strong wind in the afternoon and leave enough time to get to the next camp, we set off well before sunrise. We climb the steepest section at the very beginning, which then becomes gradual as we gain height. About an hour above Thorung Phedi we reach the high camp where there are few more lodges. Later on we cross a small valley, descending to the stream and climbing across the far slope. The pass is seen nearly half an hour before you come to it, and is reached by a broad, gentle slope. When you get there you will notice a rocky cairn decorated with tattered prayer flags that mark the summit. The descent to Muktinath can be quiet tedious especially on the knees so the slower pace is recommended. We get there by mid afternoon. It is one of the famous pilgrim sites. Just ten minutes below lies Ranipawa, which has many teahouses and shops. Now it is widely known to visiting trekkers as Muktinath.
Day 15 :
We start heading towards the Kaligandaki Valley on a wide track. The trail wanders gently to Jharkot and then to Khingar. The landscape is barren but the magnificent panorama of mountains, alpine desert, the mysterious region of Mustang and the Tibetan plateau is worthwhile. As we follow the easy path down to the bottom, we reach Eklebhatti. Following the river bed of Kaligandaki we head for Jomsom. This part of the walk is very notorious for the strong wind. Jomsom is the main township of the valley and the administrative centre of the Mustang District.
Day 16 :
After two hours from Jomsom we reach Marpha which is the cleanliest town on the whole trek and has a lot of apple orchards. From here the trail continues along the right bank of the valley. We cross several villages today such as Tukuche, Khobang, Larjung, Kokethanti and reach Kalopani, which is our next place to spend a night. From here we can have a wonderful view of Dhaulagiri icefall, Nilgiris and Annapurna 1.
Day 17 :
This stage is long and quite strenuous with lots of switchbacks to the trail, but there are several villages along the way where the route could be conveniently broken if required. We will be crossing few landslip areas so we take a new trail every now and again. Gradually the vegetation returns on the walk to Tatopani, one of the vest known hot springs in Nepal where the trekkers as well as the locals take an opportunity to soak away the accumulated trail dust. This place is also one of the most important villages for trekkers as it contains the necessary supplies for a successful trip - the best chocolate and apple or lemon meringue pies on the circuit.
Day 18 :
After leaving the village we climb up the stone steps and cross Kali Gandaki on a suspension bridge. We cross another smaller river and reach Ghar Khola, a small village with the ACAP office, where we bear left. The trail to the right follows the Kali Gandaki to Beni for an alternative route back to Pokhara. Leaving the valley just below Tatopani, the route now makes a long and tiring climb to Sikha which commands asuperb panorama, not just to the mountains, but down over a glorious landscape of textured, layered hills, terraced and patterned with great artistry.
Day 19 :
Climbing through the terraces above Sikha, you will reach Phalante, a small village with few lodges and a large school. After 20 minutes you will reach Chitre. From here to Ghorepani, you will be walking through the rhododendron and oak forest, which looks beautiful in the spring when the flowers are out.
Day 20 :
Visit Poon Hill early in the morning, which lies to the west of Ghorepani Deurali, which is one of Nepal’s most famous view points. In the clear mornings, both the Annapurnas and Dhaulagiris can be seen in all their glory as the rising sun tinges their peaks.
Day 21 :
The trail follows the rhododendron and oak forest as we start heading downhill to Banthanti where we break for lunch. We descend steep downhill on the steps to Tikhe Dhunga and on this stage of the walk we will be out of the forest.
Day 22 :
Today we will be on the left bank of Bhurungdi River. This part of the walk is good for bird watchers. There are lovely waterfalls on the way and the fragrance of the crop growing along the side of the trail gives you aroma of the countryside. We reach Nayapul in three hours from where we take a van to Pokhara. Overnight in Pokhara.
Day 23 :
A scenic mountain flight back to Kathmandu and transfer to Hotel. Your Group Leader will collect the trek pack and then you are free to continue exploring this wonderful city, shop for souvenirs, get your photos processed and try out the various restaurants in Thamel. Your Group Leader will be happy to show you around and help you with your shopping.

The day-to-day schedule should be taken only as a general guide. A variety of factors, including adverse weather conditions, difficulty with transportation and politics can lead to enforced changes. Because of this it is not possible to guarantee that any of our holidays will run exactly according to the planned itinerary. The trip leader will make any changes, which are necessary. |

There are a variety of interesting extensions you might choose to add on either before or after your trek. These options include: |
Chitwan National Park: It provides excellent opportunities to view the rare species such as sloth bear, bison, rhinoceros, leopard and the exclusive tiger. Early morning jungle walks and safaris on elephant back are amongst the most popular activities. The jungle lodge can be reached from Kathmandu either by air or by private vehicle.
White Water Rafting: On the Trisuli or Seti Rivers.
Mount Everest Scenic Flight: An hour flight departs Kathmandu early morning and provides spectacular views of Mount Everest and the surrounding mountains.
Cultural Tour:
Nepal boasts a rich cultural diversity, and it is well worth exploring. The Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal is a dream-world for many and reality for some. Once experienced they can never be forgotten, never dismissed from memory whether ones experience of them is visiting age-old Hindu temples, Buddhist monasteries and royal palaces with amazing sculptures, paintings, legends and living rituals. Nepal is not only regarded as "Shangri-la" for adventurers but a scenic revelation and an educational in itself to all visitors. Once seen they become a part of you, habit-forming and intrusive. We have put our best effort to incorporate all cultural delights as well as natural beauty that Nepal has to offer, which you can chose depending on your time availability. |
Please contact the Alps in Nepal office if you plan to extend your trip and let us know in advance. |
